The Untold Story of Ronnie Dunn
Ronnie Dunn is widely recognized as one half of the legendary country duo Brooks & Dunn. But the journey that led him to stardom began long before that name ever existed.
Growing up, Ronnie was immersed in the world of country music. His father managed a small ranch while also performing as a singer in a band in Abilene, Texas. Yet it wasn’t until college that Ronnie truly found his own path. While exploring different interests, he discovered a deep passion for music—one that echoed his father’s influence but was uniquely his own.
He began performing with a band in halls associated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States across Texas. After graduating, Ronnie decided to seriously pursue a music career and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. While many of his peers were heading to Nashville to become songwriters, Ronnie chose Tulsa, where the country scene was thriving and where his mother lived.
With the rise of the Urban Cowboy Movement and support from booking agent Jim Halsey, Ronnie found steady work performing in clubs around the city. For several years, he was able to make a living doing what he loved—playing music.
A turning point came unexpectedly when a friend entered him into the Marlboro National Talent Roundup without telling him. To his surprise, Ronnie was selected. He and his band went on to win the regional competition and advanced to Nashville, where they performed in front of judges including Johnny Cash and June Carter—and won. The victory led to touring opportunities with Merle Haggard and Alabama, as well as a recording session with Hank Williams Jr., where he met producer Scott Hendricks.
Surprisingly, instead of immediate success, Ronnie returned to Tulsa and heard nothing for nearly two years. Then came a life-changing call from music executive Tim DuBois, who invited him to Nashville. There, fate intervened—Tim connected Ronnie with Kix Brooks. After a songwriting session together, Brooks & Dunn was born, along with their debut single “Brand New Man.”
The duo went on to become one of the most successful acts in country music history, selling over 30 million albums, earning 23 number-one hits, and collecting dozens of prestigious awards. After more than two decades together, they parted ways in 2011. Ronnie even considered leaving music behind for a quieter life, but his passion eventually drew him back.
In 2015, Brooks & Dunn reunited with Reba McEntire for a Las Vegas residency. At the same time, Ronnie continued building his solo career, releasing his album Tattooed Heart under Big Machine Label Group.
Beyond music, Ronnie has also been deeply involved in charitable work, supporting organizations like Folds of Honor, which provides scholarships to families of fallen or disabled service members. For Ronnie, music is more than a career—it’s a platform to make a meaningful difference.
